The source materiel I have chosen is a video game named the Last of Us, released June 4, 2013, by Naughty Dog and Gustavo Santaolalla. This game is about the journey of two characters across a post apocalyptic U.S. filled with undead and thieving bandits. Threw out your journey you will encounter different enemies, challenges, and puzzles. You play as a middle aged man named Joel whoʼs current job is to smuggle a teenage girl named Ellie. You struggle and fight to get her to a rebellion group known as the fireflies. This group believes that Ellis is the key to developing a cure for the disease plaguing the world. The very beginning of The Last of Us is set in 2013 where you are introduced to one of the main characters Joel. Joel appears to be about in his thirties, he is about six feet tall, black hair and beard. You are given some background about his life before the apocalypse. At this time the city they are living in is being evacuated and has began quarantining the area because of an outbreak. While they are trying to escape the quarantined area Joel’s daughter is killed by a soldier. After this scene you jump 10 years forward to 2023 where the zombie outbreak has only gotten worse. We see Joel, who has more grey hairs, bigger bags under his eyes, and a shell of his former self. He is in what appears to be a run down, crammed, and chaotic area in Boston Massachusetts. It is here where we are introduced to our second main character Ellis. Ellis is about 16 years old, 5’3, short brown hair that’s about half way down her neck, green eyes and a slight scar on her right eyebrow. One motif that can be seen throughout the game is Joel turning his back on humanity to protect Ellie because of his love for her as a daughter. He kills many individuals to protect her and would do anything no matter what it was to keep her safe. Even if thatʼs to develop a cure to save the world. The second motif are the bandits and cannibalistic humans throughout the game. This shows that maybe the zombies arenʼt the monsters but we humans are and we would do anything to survive like rob, kill and eat other people. I chose this source because I very much enjoyed the game and story line throughout it. I also enjoy the progression of Joel’s feelings toward Ellis throughout the game. At first he sees her as a liability or just another job to finish and get paid. But by the end he more or less sees her as his own daughter and cares for her very much. I wouldn’t want to change much about this because I already enjoy it a lot. But if I could add something to it I would extend the time we have with Joel and his daughter before apocalypse. So we can attach ourselves more to her so when she does die we can relate to Joel’s pain more. I plan on emphasizing the main theme that we humans are the true monsters and maybe we shouldn’t be saved. I would like to fast forward a few years after the ending of The Last of Us and further Ellis and Joel’s journey together. If i continue on with the original story line I believe the main theme of the game may change. I feel it would continue on with the idea that it may not be your child but with enough time you will love it as if it was. But would add a theme of the meaning of life is to pass on information to the next generation.
